Dad’s WWII Letters Home – Letter 6

Sergeant Kennedy, my dad
Sergeant Kennedy, my dad

This is another incomplete letter that I came across with the others that my Dad wrote while in the service during WWII. It appears he was still in Miami and continued to write about his allotment getting settled so he could have money sent directly home. Along with Track and field, my Dad was an avid football fan and had season tickets to his beloved Patriots until the day he died. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine the world before the internet when you had to wait to read about out of town scores in the paper, if they were printed at all, and not google them instantly.

Oh, the countless things many of us have seen in our lifetime. Times were very different!

Dear Mom,

How’s my girl? Well, here I am after such a long time but I’ve been awful busy what with getting used to this new shift, having schedules changed every day. We have a new general in charge of the field and we have to parade for him this afternoon so I’m trying to this letter before lunch.

Enclosed is the $20 that I promised to send home. I talked to a Lieutenant yesterday about an allotment and I explained the situation to him and he said that it would be best to keep sending the money home because it would take anywhere from a month to three months for the allotment to go through. So I’ll send the money home until I get to a tactical unit and then I’ll try again.

Well, I’ve only got about eight days of actual school then a week of field work then I’ll probably be sent to gunnery school.

So far this week I’ve had three exams and I’ve got three nineties and I’ve got three more days of school this week and if I keep up the good work I’ll graduate for sure.

By the way, will you send me as much clippings about the football games back there as you can because I’d like to know what the teams are like back home. I won’t have any chance to see a football game this year so I’ll have to read about them in the papers, so please send me the clippings of the games. Thanks.

How’s the family and how are you? I hope that everything is okay. Is dad still working hard or has the work slipped off? Is Pat still working?

This new shift that I’m on is okay, we get plenty of sleep…
