Dad’s Letters Home from WWII – Volume 9

Sergeant Kennedy, my dad
Sergeant Kennedy, my dad

This letter is very telling to me about my Dad’s relationship to his siblings and his parents. The teasing is lovingly strong? Ha! I wish I’d read it as a kid because he teases his mother in a way I’d never have teased him or my mom. No way I would have gotten away with that! Something tells me he was playing the long distance card, she can’t kill him if she can’t reach him! My mom also makes her first appearance in this letter in the sweetest of ways. Also, money was so tight during the war that it is interesting to me how he got what sounded like much needed dental work from joining the services.

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Friday, Nov. 5th

Hi Mom,

How’s my girl? I hope that you’re okay and not working too hard. The first thing I have to say is that I’ll see you in about eight to twelve weeks and I want you to be looking good when I drop in.

About that notice put in the paper, I think the squadron that I was in at Lowry Field sent it out to the home newspapers, because when I first went there I filled out a card and had to put the home newspaper on it and I put the American, so that must be where they got it.

By the time you get this letter you should know where I am and what my address is.

Boy, George is really stepping out well, I hope he meets as nice a girl as Rosemary, Mom, with me she’s the tops. Tell him to write me a letter once in a while, hell, I’d like to hear from him after all, he is my brother and if he has the time he should drop me a line, I’d certainly appreciate it but if he hasn’t got the time then I’d be happier when I know that he’s really hitting the books and getting his education. By the way how about sending your son a picture of yourself and Dad, then tell George and Pat and Jean to all send me one, so I can remember what the ugly mugs all look like.

I received a letter from Mildred today and she says that both my “little” sisters have finally grown up and that they are both nice-looking young ladies. So how about some pictures, you “Irish tub of lard,” or have you lost some weight. Ha! Ha!

By the way, if you have a couple of dollars that you don’t need, I could use them because I haven’t as yet, been paid for the month of October and I’m flat broke and I’d appreciate a little assistance. Thanks.

Tell Dad I’m proud of him and I know he’ll make a darn good Air-Raid Warden. Tell him to keep up the good work and be good.

I went to the dentist and had a tooth filled and I have eight more to be filled, I guess that most of the fillings that Dr Branchard put in have fallen out but I’m finally having all my teeth taken care of. I bet that pleases you and it’s not costing me a cent, good isn’t it?

Well, I guess that’s about all the news for now, be good, take care of yourself and God Bless you.

Your loving son,

Frannie

P.S. I’ll write in a couple of days, give my love to the rest of the family.
