I’ve seen many comments about what to do now that the election is over, and for those of us definitely NOT in the Trump camp, what do we do with the many emotions welling up in ourselves? What saddens me the most is not just that we now have a President-elect who brags about sexually assaulting women and openly mocks disabled individuals like me. Spare me the argument he made the same gesture towards Ted Cruz when he inferred Cruz was intellectually disabled thus lumping all disabilities into the same physical actions and attributes, which is repulsive no matter how you slice it. Also, I know of at least one woman walking down the street in California after the results came in last night told to smile by one guy and other guys made jokes about her pussy. How is this acceptable? What year did we crawl back in to? It’s open season on anyone who is not a white, able-bodied American male and what bothers me most is 47.5% of voters had no problem putting this man in the White House. So what are we going to do about it?
I’ve seen two responses that spoke volumes to me. The first is to give yourself 24-48 hours to be bummed or frustrated or angry or pissed off. It’s okay. You’ve earned those emotions and after this election cycle they are quite reasonable in my opinion. But don’t dwell on it. Letting those emotions rule you for too long just isn’t healthy. That brings me to the second response.
Fight back! If our worst fears are brought to fruition by the Orange One there are going to be a lot of people in some serious need of help in the not too distant future. One friend’s response is perfect. She is going to make a $25 donation to a different charity each pay period that she feels will be impacted by the Comb Over. Brilliant! If you can’t quite swing $25, how about $10? Or $5
Here are a few places you can donate to:
Women’s rights and support
This organization provides so much health care to women and it is absolutely in jeopardy. They could use some support.
The nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization helps many victims of sexual assault, which many fear will become even more prevalent during the next administration.
Rosie’s Place has long been a Boston institution for providing sanctuary for poor and homeless women, a number that could increase dramatically if the economy takes a turn for the worse.
Disability issues
End Abuse of People with Disabilities
If the President can mock those of us who are disabled, it’s just a matter of time before there are even more crimes committed against us that as a group is already one of the “most harmed groups” in America.
Again, if the President has been accused of mocking the disabled, it might not be a priority for his administration to provide ample employment opportunities for them. This is an excellent local group on Cape Cod doing exceptional work in the area of employing the disabled.
Healthcare
This organization is near and dear to my heart and can always use your support but if Obamacare is indeed taken away as has been threatened then they will need your assistance even more.
Again, if the Affordable Care Act goes away, these services will be in high demand.
If you have concerns about our standing in the world, donating to Doctors Without Borders is an excellent way to show the world that Americans care.
Legal issues
The ACLU has already threatened to take legal action against the next administration if they implement many of the ideas proposed during the campaign.
The NAACP has been providing legal assistance and fighting for racial justice for over 70 years and with the recent injustices unfolding before our very eyes their work is certainly needed now and likely more in the not too distant future.
If you have legal concerns about immigration and wall building, both literally and figuratively, this organization specializes in assisting ALL Latinos.
Native American issues
The Native American Heritage Association
NAHA provides assistance for families living on Reservations in South Dakota. If you feel that Standing Rock is only the beginning, consider supporting these folks.
Hunger issues
Provides long-term nutrition assistance globally for those who strive to assist people beyond our borders.
With the potential for some life altering cuts by the new administration the Greater Boston Food Bank provides excellent food services locally. If you’re not in the Boston area, feel free to contribute to food banks and shelters in your area.
Environmental issues
Global Warming is not a hoax and was not invented by the Chinese. This issue will not be a priority for the new regime.
Earthworks is opposed to fracking and will likely need support to take on the new administration.
Refugee concerns
Assisting the world’s refugee crisis will not be part of the new President’s agenda. This organization assists refugees in rebuilding their lives safely and with dignity in the U.S. and all over the world.
Elderly issues
With talks about cutting programs that assist the elderly, this group might be called upon more than it has in the past.
And finally…
It’s an excellent organization and Hillary could use the love right now. Plus, can you think of a better way than to give his Orangeness the proverbial middle finger?
Thank you. Great idea to ‘fight back’ with proactive kindness. Hope you don’t mind sharing.
